Watch Out for Silverfish and Fabric Pests

Residents are being advised to protect their latest vintage finds and favourite winter fashion pieces from damage caused by silverfish, which may be lurking in closets and snacking on clothes.

Silverfish are small soft insects that are silvery-white in colour and can measure up to 25mm in length.

Silverfish generally feed on silk, cotton, rayon and linen however they can feed on any type of material or fibre that contains a carbohydrate like starch.

They will also feed on household items including book bindings, wall paper, regular paper, rolled oats and flour, so it’s not just your clothes that are at risk.

Garments that have been damaged by silverfish generally have irregular arc-shaped holes in them.

You can take preventative measures to guard against silverfish and help protect the contents of your closet.

Silverfish can live for up to four years and seek out warm, dark secluded areas such as cupboards and closets. With the warmer weather it is important to be on the lookout for silverfish.

To prevent silverfish targeting your clothes you should ensure clothes are stored in airtight plastic containers or bags rather than cardboard boxes.

Silverfish are one of a number of fabric pests that can cause damage to clothing during winter.

In addition to silverfish, other fabric pests including clothes moths and carpet beetles are also active in many homes.

If you see these pests or damaged garments you should call a qualified pest controller who will treat the area to ensure that they are all eradicated and provide you with advice on how to make sure your precious garments are protected in the future,
